The Group’s Areas of Interest
- Promote responsible and sustainable waste management practices throughout the community
- Enhance and expand recycling efforts of local businesses, residents and government agencies.
- Encourage reuse of materials whenever possible
- Promote the purchase of products made from recycled materials
Goals
Short Term
- Share our successes and goals with the community
- Educate residents on services available and clear up misconceptions
- Work with consultants and City to incorporate more sustainable practices in the upcoming residential solid waste contract renewal process (November 2010)
- Discourage/ban use of polystyrene and plastic bags
Long Term
- Implement a food waste composting program for residential (curbside), business and commercial properties.
- Develop a local centralized drop-off center for all types of items---CFL Bulbs, household chemicals, recyclables, prescription drugs, electronics, etc…
- Increase the waste diversion rate by 5% each year
- Investigate and implement, where appropriate, fuel and cooking oil recycling programs
